The sunrise during the Winter Solstice at Stonehenge is a magical event that everybody should experience at least once in their lives. In 2014 the solstice will be celebrated early in the morning of the 22nd of December. The early morning gathering is a mystical event, shrouded in history and old traditions. And it’s your chance to come together with other visitors, druids, pagans and families all bearing witness to the sun.

Stay

Finding a place to stay couldn’t be easier as the Amesbury Travelodge is very close at hand, making it a perfect choice for your early morning start. The Travelodge beds are super comfy and the freshly designed room are the perfect base for a short winter break. As well as visiting Stonehenge, don’t miss Salisbury Cathedral, which is just 8 miles away. You’ll also want to tell your friends you’ve been to the lesser known, but hugely impressive Avebury Stone Circle.

Visit

Stonehenge is busy at the best of times, but solstice is a particularly popular time to visit, so you need to plan ahead. First off, only 4,000 visitors can get into the site for the event, which means you need to arrive extra early. Sunrise is a little after 8am and the best spots will be gone by 6.30am. Parking is limited at Stonehenge, so be prepared to park a way off if you’re not up with the birds, with at least a 30-minute walk to the site. And bring your torch – remember it’s the shortest day of the year!

History

The ancient Britons believed that on the Winter Solstice,the sun and moon stopped in their journey across the sky. And as the solstice marks the shortest day of the year, they celebrated the sun’s rebirth as a sign that spring was coming. During the solstice, the sunlight seems to appear through the stones of Stonehenge, making the mystical landmark unmissable on this singular morning.

If watching the sunrise leaves you feeling a bit peckish you may want to check out one of these establishments for a good meal! The Stonehenge Cafe is a good option for a quick bite. They serve hot soups, sandwiches and even local beer, while The Stonehenge Inn is a good place for breakfast. If you’re feeling extra hungry, the carvery is an excellent value option for just £6.50 a person, and is served from midday. For a yummy evening meal, head to Bill’s in Salisbury and indulge in a cocktail or two. Or spoil yourself entirely with the divine Nutella and Fluff marshmallow brioche sandwich with pistachio ice cream and strawberry sauce.
