Make your day at The Mall, Luton

Opened in 1972 as The Arndale Centre (many locals still use that name), The Mall Luton was one the largest covered shopping centre in Europe. It now has more than 100 retail units across two floors and enough spaces to park 2,300 cars, making visiting here simple and convenient.

Whipsnade Zoo - Bedfordshire's top animal attraction

Among the attractions close to Luton is Whipsnade Zoo. Owned by the Zoological Society of London, it is devoted to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. It welcomed its first furry and feathered inhabitants in 1928, and the gates opened to the public three years later. It's now a far larger and more sophisticated place, with such attractions as lions, sea lions, elephants, rhinos and a wide variety of smaller beasts, including meerkats, lemurs and penguins.

A blast from the past at Stockwood Museum

One of two free admission museums in Luton (the other being Wardown Park Museum), Stockwood Discovery Centre explores local history, archaeology and geology. Of particular note are a large exhibition of rural crafts and the Mossman Collection, Europe's largest horse-drawn carriage collection.
