Northwich - former salt capital of the world

Known for its salt mines, this productive Cheshire town has many buildings and attractions that reflect its industrial past. At the Lion Salt Works, which reopened in 2015 after a �10 million facelift, you can learn all about the salt-making process. See how the spectacular Anderton Boat Lift, linking the River Weaver with the Trent and Mersey Canal, was used to help transport the salt from the mines.

Bask in wild parklands

Next to the historic boat lift is Anderton Nature Park. Discover how this former industrial wasteland has allowed some unusual wildlife to flourish. At Marbury Country Park you can meander along the mere, taking in the lovely views over the water to the pretty village of Great Budworth. Don't miss the arboretum and community orchard.

Opened at the end of 2016, Barons Quay is a modern waterside retail complex in the heart of the town. It's home to Asda, M&S, a multi-screen cinema, bars and restaurants, and has 900 free parking spaces.
