Old-fashioned fun by the sea

If you like your seaside resorts on the traditional side, you'll like Canvey Island. This small island in the River Thames estuary off the coast of Essex serves up sandy beaches, fish and chip suppers and fairground rides. A walk along the seafront will blow the cobwebs away as you breathe in the invigorating sea air. From the beach you get good views of the Kent coastline, and you can watch ships sailing up the Thames.

Thrills at Leisure Island

Situated right on the seafront, this funfair will keep families with young children entertained, and is great value for money. Once you've bought a 5 wristband you can go on as many rides as you like. Have a whirl on the dodgems, mini rollercoaster, waltzers and pirate ship. There's also a safari train and crazy golf.

Adventures in the great outdoors

Canvey Island is one of the best places in England for windsurfing. When the breeze is against the tide, the short waves are perfect for jumping. If you prefer less adrenaline-filled outdoor activities, the wetlands at West Canvey Marsh have a wonderful array of birds to spot, including lapwings, little egrets and marsh harriers. Looking for a cheap hotel Near Canvey Island? Travelodge Southend-on-Sea Hotel is around 5 miles from the resort and offers more seaside fun. Travelodge Basildon Hotel is a great base for exploring Essex.
