The sweet smell of success in Wallington

Nestled between Sutton and Croydon in south London, this peaceful town used to be a big player in the production of lavender. Its sweet-smelling past is remembered with a large sculpture of a lavender plant at the top of the high street next to Sainsbury's.

Culture vultures might also enjoy a visit to The Brook, a cafe and bar that also hosts film-themed nights and music gigs.

Unwind in the area's parks and gardens

The Wallington area is blessed with several green spaces to enjoy. Mellows Park has football pitches, a skate park and outdoor gym, while Beddington Park and Grange Gardens was originally a deer park attached to Carew Manor, a grand country house built in the Tudor period.

It's made up of a large area of open grassland with small clusters of trees, with the River Wandle running through it. Near The Grange restaurant, you'll find an area of formal gardens, as well as a lake and ornamental bridges crossing a stream.

Hit the fairways

Wallington is close to a couple of good golf courses. The Oaks has both a full-size 18-hole course and tricky nine-hole short course, plus a floodlit driving range for you to practise your swing. Established in 1912, Woodcote Park Golf Club is set within acres of beautiful parkland just outside Coulsdon.
