Journey through Merseyside at the Museum of Liverpool

Everything you need to know about the history and social culture of Liverpool is at this free museum down on the waterfront. Jump aboard the Overhead Railway, see the stage where John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met and discover what it means to be a Scouser. Exhibits include a life-size Liver Bird, Chris Boardman's famous Lotus bike and the first Ford Anglia produced at the Halewood factory.

Shop 'til you drop at Liverpool ONE

Across the road from the docks is this modern open-air shopping haven, where you'll find more than 170 stores, bars and restaurants. Browse high-street favourites such as John Lewis, Zara, Topshop and Victoria's Secret. The top of the building is a pleasant surprise if you've never visited before. The rooftop Terrace and Chavasse Park area offers a fiesta of food options, and during summer it's a lovely place for a picnic.

Marvel at modern art at Tate Liverpool

Also down on the waterfront, at Albert Dock, is this brilliant gallery that's a must-see for culture vultures.
