Peasholm Park in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, is never closed. While its popularity peaks in high season, it still has its own distinct charms throughout the year - even on a bleak January afternoon. It plays host to several events, including orchestral performances and its famous miniature naval warfare recreations on the lake. Boating and miniature golf are also available.
Be beside the seaside
Scarborough's seafront has been popular since Victorian times, and it's not hard to see why. The beaches are fantastic - particularly the North Bay, which has Blue Flag status - and the arcades and entertainments along the promenade retain a pleasing, quaint feel.
Take in North Yorkshire's rugged beauty
Within a short drive of Scarborough are all manner of natural gems, with the North York Moors just inland, and Whitby and the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast to the north. To the south, Flamborough Head is terrific for birdwatchers, while Bridlington offers another pleasant seaside experience.
