Breathtaking grandeur at Castle Howard

Located just 15 miles north of York in North Yorkshire, Castle Howard is, in fact, not a castle at all. One of England's finest stately homes, the Grade-I listed residence of the Howard Family gained fame as the setting for Granada's hit TV adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited. Today, visitors can tour the exquisitely manicured formal gardens and marvel at a stunning private art collection, while kids will love Geoffrey the Lion's fun illustrated trail.

Medieval charm in York

York is one of England's finest historical cities. Waste no time and head straight for the Shambles, a wonderfully ramshackle medieval lane dotted with cute tea rooms and independent shops. Then head for the city's world-famous Minster, one of the largest gothic churches in northern Europe. Take in the grand nave before ascending the central tower for the best views over the city. Later sample a drink in York's atmospheric pubs.

Breathtaking scenery in the North York Moors

York is only a 45-minute drive from one of England's finest national parks, the North York Moors. Start at Helmsley, with its 900-year old castle, and walk the popular route to the ruined Rievaulx Abbey. Cyclists flock to the disused Rosedale Railway, now home to one of England's most stunning cycle routes. You can also breathe in superb views atop Spaunton Moor. Planning a trip to York? Travelodge York Central Layerthorpe Hotel is just outside the city walls, while Travelodge York Central Hotel is perfect for exloring the winding Shambles.
