Clun, a walker's paradise in Shropshire

If you're looking to slow down the pace of life a little, with invigorating walks in the great outdoors, Clun won't disappoint. This peaceful Shropshire town is a delightful place to spend some time.

Enjoy leisurely strolls beside the River Clun, keeping an eye out for brown trout and the elusive Clun otter, and walk up to Clun Castle, which sits high on a rocky mound overlooking the town. It's a wonderful spot for a picnic.

Step back in time at the House on Crutches Museum

A short drive takes you to the lovely small town of Bishop's Castle and this unique museum dating back to Elizabethan times. It's housed in an eye-catching timber-framed building supported by stilts.

Its four rooms are devoted to domestic life, local businesses, agriculture and childhood. Learn about the history of local brewers, clothing manufacturers and shoemakers, and amuse yourself with a collection of toys and games from the 19th century, including a miniature performing bareback rider.

Put your best foot forward at Offa's Dyke

Clun is surrounded by the glorious Shropshire Hills, and there are some fine walks on your doorstep, including Offa's Dyke, which marks the border between England and Wales. Why not make a day of it to see how far you can get along the 177-mile Offa's Dyke Path, stopping off to refuel at a cosy inn along the way?
