The University of Sheffield - rated top by students

Founded more than a century ago, the University of Sheffield is found slightly to the west of the main city centre, but regular buses and the Supertram make travelling around the Steel City easy. The university's famous alumni include Eddie Izzard, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Amy Johnson. In 2017, it was voted the number one Russell Group university for student experience by The Times.

Splash around at Ponds Forge

As the National City of Sport, Sheffield has loads to do for those who like to keep fit. Ponds Forge is an Olympic-standard pool, but you can swim some lengths at your own pace. In the Surf City leisure pool, a wave machine and slides keep families more than entertained.

The Matrix bouldering wall is part of the University of Sheffield's Goodwin Sports Centre, and is open to the public as well as students.

See a play at The Crucible

Sheffield is known for its excellent theatres. Not only is The Crucible the home of the World Snooker Championship, it also plays host to some of the country's finest actors, comedians and dancers. Sitting round the stage creates an intimate atmosphere. The adjoining Lyceum has the top touring productions, from opera and West End musicals to ballet and contemporary dance.
