Amazing wildlife in Dearne Valley

The small South Yorkshire town of Wath upon Dearne has a fantastic RSPB reserve at Dearne Valley - Old Moor. With open water and grasslands aplenty there are many different bird species. For those with a keen eye, see if you can spot any Kingfishers, Little Owls, Lapwings, Golden plovers or Tree sparrows. There is a lovely cafe, picnic area, guided walks and Visitor Centre with great facilities. Free for RSPB members and entrance charges are very reasonable.

Take a dip

The Wath upon Dearne Leisure Centre has a great indoor pool open to the general public. There is also a kids pool, state of the art gymnasium and cafe overlooking the swimming pool area. You can also book classes online if you're a bit of a regular gym goer.

Yorkshire History

Only 10 minutes' drive away from Wath upon Dearne is the Elsecar Heritage Centre. This is a living history centre where you can check out the Elsecar Heritage railway, art studios, workshops for crafting, antique centres as well as a kid's indoor play centre and cafe. There are great canal side walks and access to the Trans Pennine Trail, making the village of Elsecar well worth a visit.
