Stay nearby
1. Retail therapy at the Bullring
Fancy a bit of retail therapy? The Bullring is a must-visit! The Bullring has sat at the heart of the city since the Middle Ages, once a bustling marketplace for local traders, and today it’s a shopping hotspot that mixes history with modern style. With two huge wings to wander through, you’ll find everything from big-name fashion like TKMaxx and Zara to boutique gems like Selfridges & Co and Neals Yard Remedies. Plus, there are plenty of places to grab a bite when you need to refuel.
Right next door, Grand Central is seamlessly linked by a pedestrian bridge, creating the cityâs ultimate shopping destination. Whether youâre after a new outfit or the latest tech, itâs the perfect spot for a spending spree.
2. Visit Brindleyplace and the Canal Quarter
No trip to Birmingham is complete without a wander around Brindleyplace and the Canal Quarter. This part of the city feels like it has its own little rhythm. You can expect colourful narrowboats bobbing on the water, converted warehouses full of bars and cafĂŠs and plenty of spots to just sit back and watch the world go by. As a solo traveller, itâs the perfect area to slow down and soak in the local atmosphere. You can grab a coffee and take a gentle stroll along the towpaths, dip into Ikon Gallery or check out the regular local events nearby.
Evenings here are just as inviting. Brindleyplace has a great mix of restaurants, from relaxed bites to fancier spots, if you feel like treating yourself. Plus, the area hosts outdoor markets and live music, so it easy to strike up a conversation with locals or fellow travellers.
3. Take a chocolate-y tour of Cadbury World
Got a sweet tooth and a free afternoon? Cadbury World is the ultimate chocolate escape. Step into this cocoa-filled paradise and uncover nearly two centuries of Cadbury history, discover how chocolate is made and (best of all) treat yourself to plenty of samples along the way.
Take a wander through the famous advertising trail, where youâll spot some iconic Cadbury ads that will spark a bit of nostalgia. You can watch chocolatiers in action during live demonstrations – the perfect excuse to pause, breathe in those rich cocoa aromas and maybe even pick up a trick or two. And yes, while there are family-friendly rides, solo visitors wonât miss out on the fun – itâs easy to take the tour at your own pace, linger where you like and indulge in a few extra bites (no oneâs judging!). A visit here is all savouring, and, of course, leaving with your hands full of chocolate.
4. National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham
The National SEA LIFE Centre is a surprisingly calming and awe-inspiring stop on your Birmingham solo trip. Home to over 2,000 creatures, from jellyfish and seahorses to giant sea turtles, there’s plenty of gorgeous marine sights to uncover here. The underwater tunnel is a real highlight – thereâs something pretty magical about watching sharks and rays glide overhead while you stroll beneath them.
The National SEA LIFE Centre is also a perfect little escape from the buzz of the city. You can take your time at the exhibits that catch your eye or simply sit and enjoy the soothing sounds of the ocean world.
5. Window shop in the Jewellery Quarter
If you love a good wander, the Jewellery Quarter is the perfect place to soak up Birminghamâs sparkle. Home to over 700 jewellers and independent retailers, this historic district is a treasure trove of boutique shopfronts and specialist workshops. Even if youâre not planning on buying, window shopping here feels like stepping into a living museum, with craftsmanship thatâs been part of the city for more than 250 years.
Whether youâre hunting for a one-of-a-kind souvenir or just enjoying the stunning craftsmanship, the Jewellery Quarter is a part of Birmingham that shines brightest when you take your time.

Pop on your flat cap and peel back Birminghamâs shadows on the Peaky Blinders-inspired walking tour. This is an absolute must for any solo traveller looking to dive deep into the city’s gritty early-20th-century underbelly. Led by a charismatic guide dressed as Edward Shelby, youâll weave through historic alleyways and hidden corners, tracing the footsteps of the slogging gangs that once ruled the streets. Expect vivid storytelling, dramatic setting and even a chance to step into the Gunmakers Quarter or West Midlands Police Museum for a glimpse of the real drama behind the legend. Along the way, youâll learn just how much of the show rings true and where fiction dramatically blurs with fact.
The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a calm escape from the city’s hustle and bustle and the perfect spot to recharge. Located just a 20-minute bus ride from the city centre, these beautifully kept gardens feel like a little green sanctuary. With four glasshouses, youâll find yourself travelling through different climates in a single afternoon.
Beyond its striking modern architecture, the Library of Birmingham is where you can really take your time exploring. Grab a comfy corner with a book, soak up the creative atmosphere or snap a few photos of the city from the rooftop terrace.
Nothing beats a solo cinema trip! And Everyman Birmingham Mailbox is our favourite recommendation. This boutique cinema turns movie-watching into a luxury experience. Expect plush armchairs, cosy blankets and a designated little table for your snacks and drinks.
