Live it up in South East London

Visiting London is like turning up at a crossroads where each lane leads to a different village, full of strange locals and unusual rituals.

Sure, you’ve got the central hub (Big Ben, Westminster, the London Eye), but if you really want to get in and amongst it, taking one or more of the less trodden paths is a must.

Don’t worry, we’re not talking Wicker Man-less trodden here. But jumping into what the capital has to offer outside of the open-top bus tours is what it’s all about.

And while it’s tough to pick one particular area, today we’re talking about the sensational South East. New enough to still be deemed somewhat ‘undiscovered’, but somewhat less raw than a number of up-and-coming places in the Big Smoke, the South East has loads to offer. So what are you waiting for, get reading our guide and book a local Travelodge room now!

1. The Horniman Museum, Forest Hill

A veritable treasure chest of anthropological wonders, the Horniman Museum sums up the South East’s quirkiness and originality.

Opened in 1901 and famed for its collection of stuffed animals, this is one museum you will not forget in a hurry, especially after meeting probably their most famous resident, the Horniman Walrus (FYI he even has his own Twitter account @HornimanWalrus).

Why not stay in our Bromley Travelodge and check out some of the other places on this list?

2. The Bussey Building/Bar Story, Peckham

Pizza with lots of cheese on restaurant table

Peckham is another southeast London destination that’s becoming more popular by the week. Sky-high rent prices have pushed trendy Londoners further afield and Peckham is somewhere that really is a melting pot of ages, cultures and interests.

Our recommendation would be Bar Story, a small drinking hole under the arches of Peckham Rye station itself. This spot hasa cracking Happy Hour from 6pm-7pm and decent pizzas to keep you going.

Then head to the Bussey Building (arts centre and gallery by day, club by night) for a boogie and a few more drinks (go to one of their South London Soul Train nights and you’ll be hooked!).

3. Nunhead Cemetery, Nunhead

It may seem strange suggesting you wander round a cemetery, but it’s a little known fact that this particular resting place also boasts some of the best views of London. Weave your way through tombstones and crypts to the viewpoint and you’ll be spoilt with a vista of the capital as far as the eye can see. Just watch as your family and friends forget all about their reservations!

If you fancy making a weekend of it, our Greenwich Travelodge is the perfect spot to base yourself. Don’t miss the great local market which sells everything from food and drink to bric-a-brac and antique furniture.

So next time you’re in London, why not try the South East? You won’t regret it, we promise!
