1. Laing Art Gallery

The Laing Art Gallery is home to an internationally important collection of art. It focuses on British oil paintings, watercolours and ceramics. From the Marble Hall to the 19th-century display, there’s something for every art fanatic at the Laing Art Gallery. There’s even a learning space and an area for under 5s to play.

2. The Great North Museum: Hancock

The Great North Museum: Hancock is Newcastle’s museum of natural history, archaeology, geology and world cultures. The museum’s Living Planet gallery tells the story of wildlife, while the Hadrian’s Wall gallery allows you to learn about the history of the nearby heritage site. You can also check out Fossil Stories and discover the world of the ancient Egyptians. For under 5s, there are regular activities in the Mouse House.

3. Discovery Museum

The Discovery Museum is a unique space that’s the perfect place for a free family trip. There’s something to suit all ages here, including a steam-powered ship, the Newcastle Story where you can learn about the city’s history and a PLAY + INVENT space for children.

4. Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum

You can experience history at the Segedunum Roman Fort and Museum, which is completely free for children under 16. The site is the most excavated fort along Hadrian’s Wall and there is a large interactive museum plus full-scale reconstructions of a bath house. For one of the best views in Newcastle, you can head up to the top of the viewing tower.

5. Shipley Art Gallery

The Shipley Art Gallery is the North East’s leading gallery for craft and design. The gallery began collecting contemporary British art in 1977, and it now has one of the best collections of contemporary art outside London. Plus, the gallery is also home to The Henry Rothschild collection of studio ceramics and 5 gallery spaces that show a range of temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

6. Stephenson Steam Railway Museum

The Stephenson Steam Railway Museum is a great place for family-friendly fun. The museum is home to the early locomotive ‘Billy’, which was built in Newcastle in 1816. There’s also an electric locomotive built in 1909, and a fleet of passenger coaches from the 1950s. Admission to the museum is free, but there are charges for the heritage train rides.

7. South Shields Museum & Art Gallery

The South Shields Museum and Art Gallery is outside the city centre, but it’s well worth a visit. The gallery celebrates the rich heritage of South Tyneside and the people who shaped it. Exhibits include a creature corner, a Victorian pantry, an art gallery, and nationally significant works of art. Spend a few hours here and you’ll see over 4,000 years of history.

8. The Biscuit Factory

The Biscuit Factory is the UK’s largest independent commercial arts, craft and design gallery. It’s set in the heart of Newcastle’s cultural quarter, and it’s an incredibly inspirational space. At The Biscuit Factory, you’ll find lots of original, handmade and independent art. Whether you like ceramics, sculptures, paintings or prints, there’s plenty for you here. 9. Hatton Gallery

The Hatton Gallery celebrates the best of cultural life in the North East. Since opening in the early 20th century, the gallery has collected over 3,000 works. In October 2017, the gallery underwent a £4 million restoration, which helped create a modern exhibition space. Expect to find works by Francis Bacon, Richard Hamilton, Palma Giovane and many more.

10. Grainger Market

12. The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art is one of Newcastle’s coolest spaces. It’s an experimental space housed in a landmark industrial building that sits right on the river. As the UK’s largest dedicated contemporary art institution, there’s plenty to keep you interested and it’s easy to spend a full afternoon being amazed and intrigued by the art on display.

13. Quayside Sunday Market

The Quayside Sunday Market has been part of local culture in the North East since the 1700s. It features independent traders from all over the region and you can buy everything from handmade jewellery to fresh food. 14. Seven Bridges

Newcastle’s Seven Bridges span the vast River Tyne. As you pass over each, you’ll get a unique view of the city and its surroundings. From the world-famous Tyne Bridge to the lesser known Redheugh Bridge, each has its own character and appeal. Be sure to grab a photo of each as you pass along.

15. Angel of the North

The Angel of the North is probably the most famous piece of public art in the UK. The monument stands 54m wide and 20m high, which means it’s taller than 4 double decker buses! It’s the perfect place for an Instagram snap, but make sure you do the pose!

16. Rising Sun Country Park

Rising Sun Country Park is popular with visitors who are looking for a break from the city centre. Located in North Tyneside, the park stretches for 162 hectares and it’s full of ponds, woodlands and extensive grasslands. Within Rising Sun Country Park, you’ll also find a countryside centre and a farm. It’s a great place for the whole family, so why not take a picnic and spend a day relaxing?

17. The Lit & Phil Library

18. Bessie Surtees House

Bessie Surtees House is actually two houses that are located next to each other in the centre of the city. 19. Newcastle Cathedral

Newcastle Cathedral towers over the city centre. Its Lantern Tower is iconic and has adorned Newcastle’s city-scape for generations. The cathedral is Grade I listed and dates from the early 14th century. It’s a great place for the whole family to learn, play and explore, as Newcastle Cathedral even contains a space for sensory play, exploration and storytelling.

20. Chinese New Year

If you love vibrant colours and lively celebrations, then you’ll love the Chinese New Year celebrations in Newcastle. Since 2018, the traditional Lion and Dragon parade has moved to the centre of the city, so you’ll be right in the thick of the action. Head down to Eldon Square to watch the parade start, and move with it on its way to Chinatown. Expect lots of singing and dancing.

21. St Mary’s Cathedral

St Mary’s Cathedral was built by one of the greatest of all Victorian architects, Augustus Pugin. The building is notable for its beautiful needle spire and its richly carved alters. The cathedral is now a Grade I listed building and you’ll love admiring the stained-glass windows as you listen to the organ or the cathedral choir.

22. Newcastle Mela

If you’re lucky enough to be in Newcastle over the August Bank Holiday weekend, then head to Newcastle Mela. 23. Saltwell Park

Saltwell Park is one of the UK’s 10 most popular parks! 24. Greys Monument

Grey’s Monument is one of Newcastle’s most iconic landmarks. It’s named after Charles Grey, who hailed from the North East and became British Prime Minister in the 1830s. The monument is beautiful and, if you like, you can pay to climb to the top in the summer. After, why not stop in a nearby café for a cup of Earl Grey tea, which is also named after Charles Grey?

25. Walk of Fame

Newcastle’s Walk of Fame may be slightly smaller than its Hollywood equivalent, but it’s just as inspiring. It focuses on local heroes, and over 30 of the area’s most inspiring people now have their own plaque, including Alan Shearer, Ant & Dec and Sir Bobby Robson. You’ll love finding your favourite and posing for a photo.

26. Jesmond Dene

Jesmond Dene is an oasis of calm in an otherwise lively and vibrant city. It follows the River Ouseburn and acts as an important wildlife habitat. On your visit, you’ll find a narrow wooded valley, a mix of native and exotic trees, and wildlife including kingfishers and red squirrels. It stretches for over three kilometres, so it’s easy to spend a full afternoon here.

27. Grey Street

28. Leazes Park
