Top family days out in Liverpool

The city of Liverpool is jam-packed with fun stuff for visitors of all ages. If you’re looking for a no-tears trip for all the family then you’ll find plenty of options, from spending time on the water to heading to one of the UK’s biggest drive-in cinemas. Here’s our guide to the best family activities in Liverpool. Grab some ideas and book one of our Liverpool Travelodge hotels for a well-planned family getaway.

1. Catch a Flick at the Route 66 Drive-In Cinema

Not a traditional Liverpool pastime, but a fantastic family experience nonetheless, the Route 66 Drive-In Cinema at Clarence Dock has a constantly changing selection of films, from new favourites to old classics. With a screen that’s 20 metres long and sound that streams through your own car radio or a hand-held device, the drive-in brings all the magic of the cinema to the comfort of your own car.

2. Visit the Dinosaurs at The World Museum

For an educational day out that’s as fun as it is informative, head to the World Museum. Here you’ll find extensive collections of archaeology and natural science, plus plenty of family-friendly exhibits and hands-on activities. The museum also holds an aquarium and a bug house to please animal enthusiasts. Or you can explore the wonders of the stars with a visit to the planetarium.

3. Take a Tour on a Mersey Ferry

Experience a local tradition and take a ride on a legendary Mersey Ferry. There are a few different options, but the 50-minute River Explorer Cruise is usually the best bet for views. The ferries depart every hour, so make sure you check the timetable before you set off. Boats stop at a number of different locations along the route, so you can hop on and hop off at waterfront attractions such as Seacombe, Woodside on the Wirrall, Spaceport and U-boat story.

4. Visit the Tate Liverpool

An impressive addition to the Tate galleries, the Tate Liverpool is home to pieces from the national art collection. You’ll find favourites from the 1500s to the present day, but the gallery also hosts temporary exhibitions. Built in an old warehouse within the Albert Dock, the Tate Liverpool offers one of the UK’s largest collections of modern and contemporary art outside of London. Expect to see work from European greats like Picasso and Duchamp. What’s great for families are Tate’s activities for children and young people. Check their calendar for details. Don’t forget, our Liverpool Central Travelodge is just 0.3 miles away.

5. Go Intergalactic at Spaceport

Take a journey through outer space at this interactive museum next to Seacombe ferry terminal. After exploring the galleries and exhibits, take a ride in the Explorer 1 simulator or head to the planetarium for incredible views of the galaxy and solar system. If you plan ahead, try to time your visit on one of the Spaceport’s craft days, where you can get creative and take part in free craft activities.
