A slice of traditional village life in Bedfordshire

With its historic pubs, farms and cottages, the pretty village of Stanford is a quiet retreat, yet in no way are you cut off here. You're close to the bustling town of Bedford, a short drive from the A1 and a 25-minute journey from the major attractions of Woburn Abbey and Safari Park.

Wings and wheels at the Shuttleworth Collection

If you're into vintage transport, don't miss this off-the-wall museum set in an aerodrome just outside Biggleswade. See antique aircraft used in the film Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, along with classic motorcycles and Leyland buses. Next to the aerodrome is the beautiful Swiss Garden, with resident peacocks, grotto and Swiss cottage. There's also a birds of prey centre and play area for the kids.

Scenic walks along the River Ouse

In Bedford, follow The Embankment route through the town centre and park. It's a picturesque way to see many of the town's main sites, including the Butterfly Bridge and war memorial. At the end of your walk, refuel at the mock-Tudor Embankment pub. Looking for a cheap hotel Near Stanford? Sitting on the edge of Bedford, Travelodge Bedford Goldington Road Hotel is a great option.
