Historic horse racing at Carlisle Racecourse

Around three miles south of Carlisle, in the heart of Cumbria, Carlisle Racecourse hosts flat racing in the summer and National Hunt racing in winter. It's also home to the Carlisle Bell race, which has been going since 1599. With its regular programme of events plus facilities for conferences, exhibitions and weddings, this is a great place to come for a day at the races and offers good access to some of the north-west's most striking attractions such as Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle and the Lake District.

Be a Roman at Hadrian's Wall

Marvel at the incredible Roman remains of Hadrian's Wall, within 40 minutes' drive. Head to the spectacular Roman Army Museum with its 3D film experience plus a visit to the Vindolanda site with its town complex is a must. Nearby Birdoswald Fort is on the wall itself and is one of the longest surviving stretches of the wall, which makes for a lovely walk. Take a tour of the Lakes

In just over half an hour's drive and you can be in the Lake District. Feeling fit? Head up Skiddaw mountain for incredible views, or for a more peaceful walk, take a stroll around Bassenthwaite Lake. The bustling town of Keswick is very pleasant for shopping and eating.
