This sun-drenched millionaire's playground on the south coast is the place to be to rub shoulders with celebs and the super-rich. Harry Redknapp is among its most famous residents. But while this exclusive enclave in Poole Harbour is home to massive mansions with heated pools and private jetties, you'll actually find lots of free and affordable things to do here.

Bask on the glorious beach

Sandbanks Beach is generally considered to be the best on the south coast, and one of the finest in the whole country. With fine golden sand and glistening clean water, it's perfect for families, couples or friends looking for relaxation in picturesque surroundings. Watersports include jet-skiing, kayaking and sailing. A mini road train goes up and down the prom in summer, and there's a crazy golf course behind the beachfront.

Water voles and red squirrels

The Sandbanks Ferry runs between Sandbanks and Studland, crossing at the mouth of Poole Harbour. Studland Bay nature reserve is a haven for wildlife - can you spot the elusive water vole? Nature lovers can also tick Brownsea Island off their bucket list. It offers spectacular views across to the Purbeck Hills, and is famous for its red squirrels.
