Academic excellence at the University of St Andrews

The oldest university in Scotland is known the world over for its academic achievements, and is repeatedly ranked third in national league tables behind Cambridge and Oxford. It's also famously where Prince William and Kate Middleton met while studying art history.

The east coast town of St Andrews is pretty small, so university staff and students make up about half the population.

Play a round at the Old Course

As well as its highly respected university, St Andrews is also known for being the home of golf. The iconic Old Course is one of the oldest in the world and, despite its grand status, is open to everyone. There are six other courses too, all offering different challenges.

If you're not keen on playing golf but still want to learn about the history of this special place, you can enjoy a guided walk round the 1st, 17th and 18th holes of the Old Course, or get hands-on at the British Golf Museum.

Have a wee dram at Eden Mill

A tour of this distillery and brewery on the banks of the beautiful Eden Estuary is a real treat for the senses. Beer, gin and whisky are all crafted here. Learn about key ingredients and brewing techniques and, of course, sample some of the products before you go.
