Get cosy in riverside pubs in Wapping

An area of London's Docklands, Wapping is home to some fantastic waterside pubs and has a strong maritime character. It's also associated with the newspaper industry. The Battle of Wapping in 1986 saw a year-long picket of new printworks by Fleet Street printers sacked after the introduction of new technology. You can see reminders of the protests with a mural in Cable Street and a pub called the Trade Union.

A real highlight of Wapping is the Thames foreshore itself, and the historic pubs that face onto it, not least the Prospect of Whitby, which claims to be the oldest Thameside pub in London.

Check out the local arts scene

Enjoy a show at Wilton's, an atmospheric former music hall in Graces Alley that stages plays, operas, puppetry, classical music, cabaret, dance and magic shows.

Visiting for an event at Tobacco Dock? Built in the early 19th century as a warehouse for the storage of tobacco from the New World, it's now a massive events space, with its own outdoor quayside as well as the main Great Gallery, bar and vaulted Victorian walkways.

Get active at Shadwell Pierhead

If you fancy learning to sail, kayak or powerboat while you're here, the Shadwell Basin Outdoor Activity Centre is the place to be. It teaches activities on the water, as well as land-based climbing, high ropes and mountain biking.
