Down by the waterside

Surrounded by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and with a pretty waterway running through it, this historic market town is a great place to stay. It's within 10 miles of Marlborough and Newbury and you can be in London in just over an hour by train. Take a walk or a boat trip along the Kennet and Avon canal to Hungerford Wharf and admire the brightly painted narrowboats. There are walking and canoe trails as well as boat trips, and you can enjoy a drink in the pub or tea shop.

Have fun at Hungerford Arcade

Hungerford Arcade has starred in BBC's Bargain Hunt, as well as featuring in Celebrity Antiques Road Trip. The beamed building is laid out like a street, and is ram-packed with fascinating antiques and collectables, from fine silver to scientific instruments, taxidermy to English china. Once you've finished rummaging you can enjoy homemade cakes in the family-run cafe upstairs.

Visit Ashdown House

Pretty Ashdown House is half-an-hour from Hungerford on the Berkshire Downs. You can take a look around it on a guided tour, or just have fun exploring the grounds. Children will enjoy the maze and you might see some of the deer that roam the woodland. Planning a trip to Hungerford? The Travelodge Newbury London Road Hotel and the Travelodge Newbury Tot Hill Hotel are both around a 30-minute drive away. They put you within easy distance of Newbury Racecourse and Highclere Castle where Downton Abbey is filmed.
