Award-winning theatre at the University of Southampton

To the north of the city centre, in the Highfield area of Southampton, the university's main campus lies on the edge of a large woodland. Southampton Common is a haven for wildlife, and a popular place for charity runs and walks.

The university's award-winning Nuffield Southampton Theatres host shows on campus, and there's a 330-seat cinema at the students' union.

Wander through the Cultural Quarter

Southampton has undergone a lot of regeneration in recent years, with the growing Cultural Quarter creating a colourful and vibrant atmosphere in the heart of the city.

At the SeaCity Museum you can discover Southampton's links with the ill-fated Titanic, while at the City Art Gallery (where entry is free) you can admire surrealist and British contemporary paintings and sculptures.

Browse big-name brands all under one roof at Westquay shopping centre. With more than 100 stores spread across three levels, from Zara and River Island to Apple and Hotel Chocolat, it's the ideal place to while away a few hours on a rainy day in the city. There's a big Ikea store Nearby too.
