Birmingham: The UK's second city

The heart of the Midlands and a city with a growing reputation, Birmingham is - despite its size - somewhat a hidden gem. Dubbed the country's second city, it's only in recent years that it's come into its own as a destination in its own right. Whether that's shopping at the Bullring, its revamped canals or its growing foodie scene, there really is plenty to keep you entertained here. The live music scene is also one to catch.

The home of industry

The Midlands is seen as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. And many of the factories and the infrastructure built during the late 18th and early 19th century still stand. One site that's worth a visit is Stoke, with its historic pottery factories. Still producing world-class pottery today, head to the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery to see the famed pieces and learn about its history. Or head to the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire, where 10 museums and the world's first Iron Bridge celebrate the area's industrial heritage.

Spas towns and Shakespeare

For more relaxed and cultural trips, the Midlands is filled with wonderful spa towns like Leamington, not to mention Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare. Discover the natural spring waters of Leamington Spa as well as its excellent food scene, or enjoy Church Stretton in Shropshire - known as 'Little Switzerland'. For theatre fans, Stratford-upon-Avon is a must see. Planning a trip to the Midlands? You're spoiled for choice with a number of our hotels in the region - the Travelodge Birmingham Central Bull Ring Hotel is centrally located.
