Explore medieval Warkworth Castle

Warkworth Castle is a medieval fortress that towers over the small town of Warkworth in Northumbria. Once home to Shakespearean rebel Harry Hotspur, you can still explore the ruins of this magnificent castle today. Explore the medieval Duke's Rooms in the castle keep and walk the walls of the ruins, taking in the spectacular views of the Northumbrian countryside as you do.

Visit the charming town of Warkworth

Down in Warkworth, you can spend an afternoon browsing this peaceful countryside town. The Hermitage Inn, named after the chapel carved into the cliff-face Near Warkworth Castle, is a warm and inviting pub perfect for a spot of lunch.

Afterwards, head to Warkworth Beach, a clean, quiet sandy beach perfect for beach sports, coastal walks and - if you're brave - a dip in the sea.

Spot the puffins on Coquet Island

You can just about make out Coquet Island from Warkworth Beach. The RSPB reserve is home to around 35,000 birds, including puffins and kittiwakes, as well as 90 per cent of the UK's rare roseate tern population. While you can't land on Coquet Island, you can take a boat tour from Amble to see the birds in their natural habitat.

Planning a trip to Warkworth Castle? Travelodge Newcastle Seaton Burn Hotel is half an hour from the town, while Nearby Travelodge Berwick upon Tweed Hotel is a great option, too.
