Newstead Abbey - Byron's former home

Rising out majestically over landscaped grounds, this extraordinary historic house Near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire was once the home of romantic poet Lord Byron. If the abbey is open you can explore Victorian rooms and the poet's private apartments, or perhaps you're attending a wedding here. Outside, spend some time wandering through the pristine gardens and pathways that meander past lakes, ponds and waterfalls.

Family fun at Water Meadows and Wheelgate

Water Meadows Swimming Complex in Mansfield isn't your common-or-garden swimming pool. It's got a wave machine, 50-metre twister flume, rapids ride and water cannons, perfect for the kids - and adults who are young at heart. On the outskirts of the town, Wheelgate Adventure Park also has heaps of rides and activities for younger members of the family. Have a whirl on the Mini Mine coaster or squirt each other on the bumper boats.

On the trail of Robin Hood in Sherwood Forest

Wheelgate Park is on the edge of Sherwood Forest, so don't miss the legendary hideout of Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men. Admission is free, but there's a small charge to park your car. Follow the trails among the leafy glades, and stand in the shadow of the mighty Major Oak. Planning a trip to Newstead Abbey?
