See Europe's largest sundial

Close to Mansfield, this former mining town in Nottinghamshire is easily accessible by car as it's just off the M1. The star attraction in the town is Europe's largest sundial, which you'll find in the middle of Portland Square next to the Idlewells Shopping Centre. To the west of the town centre is Brierley Forest Park, built on the site of a former colliery. Wander among wildflower meadows, nature trails and sculptures.

Family fun and adventures

Speedsters can take to the racetrack at the Kurburgring. This indoor go-karting circuit is great fun for groups and families. Viewing screens are dotted around the course for spectators to enjoy your performance in all its glory - or not as the case may be. Families will also enjoy Wheelgate Park. This theme park has loads of fun rides and activities for youngsters aged 5-12. Take a ride on the Mini Mine coaster or squirt each other on the bumper boats.

Go on the trail of Robin Hood at Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest is a 30-minute drive from Sutton. Follow the trails among the leafy glades and stand in the shadow of the mighty Major Oak, the famous hideaway of Robin and his band of Merry Men. You can also explore Thieves Wood and Fountaindale, both of which have close ties with the legendary outlaw. They're located a few miles to the south of Sutton.
