Recognition at last for the South Downs

England's newest national park, becoming operational in 2011, the South Downs National Park's recognition has been a long time coming. Long have visitors to the area extolled its virtues, the 600-plus square-mile area containing some of the South's most delightful chalk-hill countryside.

Experience Winchester's tireless history

To the west of the park is the cathedral city of Winchester, Hampshire's county town. With roots tracing back to Roman times, as well as plenty of Iron Age artefacts to be found, Winchester is a great place to step back in time - although today it's also a modern and vibrant city.

Take a trip to Chichester

Chichester, on the southern edge of the park, is West Sussex's only city - and as such is a tempting prospect for visitors to the county. It's a beautiful and historic location, with excellent opportunities for shopping and eating out. The theatre scene is good, too, with Chichester Festival Theatre comprising one of the country's leading touring theatres. Planning a trip to the South Downs National Park? Travelodge Eastleigh Central Hotel, just south of Winchester, is a good place for those hoping to explore the western part of the national park. Travelodge Arundel Fontwell Park Hotel is convenient for the south, and Travelodge Alton Fourmarks Hotel to the north is also recommended.
