Want to be at the centre of everything? This West Midlands town is just 9 miles from Birmingham city centre and perfectly placed for a host of top attractions in the area, including Cadbury World and the National Sea Life Centre. In Halesowen itself, the Grade I-listed Leasowes Park is a peaceful wilderness to get away from it all, with scenic rolling hills and swans gliding across the lake.

Meet the animals at Dudley Zoo

Dudley is just 5 miles to the north of Halesowen and makes for a fun family day out. It's home to an excellent zoo, where more than 1,300 animals reside in ancient woodland around the ruins of the town's 11th-century castle. Get close to lemurs, wallabies, Asiatic bears and red pandas. See the past brought to life at the fantastic Black Country Living Museum. Hop on a tram, venture down a mine, have a whirl on a traditional fairground ride and tuck into fish and chips 1930s-style.

Pick up a bargain at Merry Hill
