Melksham - a riveting riverside market town

Roughly midway between Bath and Devizes, the market town of Melksham sits by the River Avon and the A350 in rural Wiltshire. Check out the historic quarter, brimming with independent shops and plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants. You can drink a pint brewed on the premises in the Tap Room at the Kennet and Avon Brewery on Fridays and Saturdays. Nearby Chippenham has won Purple Flag status for its vibrant mix of entertainment.

Admire some historic TV locations

The historic village of Lacock regularly appears as a film and TV location and has been included in several of the Harry Potter films, Wolf Hall, Cranford and an episode of Downton Abbey. Great Chalfield Manor and Garden also featured in Wolf Hall - serving as Thomas Cromwell's home. There are guided tours of the Medieval Manor with its Arts and Crafts garden with a spring-fed pond. Spot the griffons and monkeys on the rooftop. Lacock Abbey was the home to the pioneer photographer William Henry Fox Talbot and there's a great museum on the ground floor.

Lots to see and do close by

For a welcome change of pace, chill out at the Avebury Stone Circle which is within easy reach. You could also see canal boats working their way through the Caen Hill Locks and visit the Kennet and Avon Canal Museum. Planning a trip to Melksham? The Travelodge Devizes Hotel is ideally located, or try the Travelodge Bath Waterside Hotel, from which you can walk into town to see the ancient Roman Baths and Pump House.
