The best Christmas light switch-on’s for 2022

Christmas light switch-on’s are a true indicator that the festive season is finally here! You can’t beat the feeling of anticipation as you stand in the dim light of the street, surrounded by people, all waiting for the lights to come on.

We’ve searched for the top Christmas light switch-on’s this year so you don’t have to.


London

Each year the best Christmas lights on the streets of London are heavily debated, with some having a soft spot for the dazzling lights of Oxford Street, and others appreciating the artistic flare that Carnaby Street brings. Either way, London is definitely the place to be for Christmas lights, year after year. So far in 2022, it has been confirmed that the Oxford Street lights will be switched-on November 2nd, followed by St James and Regent Street on the 9th.

Preston

The Preston light switch-on will be a spectacular not to miss, with some incredible guests lined up for the event. Shaun Williamson will be using his original ‘Barrioke’ show to get everyone involved in a world cup sing-along. Performances from Junior Andre, Kenny Thomas, Britain’s Got Talent’s Soldiers of Swing and many more will take place throughout the night. And of course, Preston’s Commonwealth Gold Medalist Sarah Davies will be attending. Be sure not to miss out on Saturday November 10th.

Lincoln

This year the city of Lincoln has a star-studded line-up for the Christmas light event, with Kerry Katona and daughter Lily McFadden set to turn on the festive lights. Both are starring in the New Theatre Royal’s 2022 panto of Cinderella, playing the roles of ‘ugly Sister Botox’ and ‘Baby Botox’ alongside Jake Quickenden as the Fairy Godfather. Throughout the evening on November 17th, there will be entertainment and appearances from many acts, including guests from BBC Radio Lincolnshire and a special performance from Cinderella herself!

Newport

Newport’s Christmas light switch-on is offering everything from live music and fairground rides to fireworks and celebrity guests. On Saturday 19th November well-known musical acts will bring the festive spirit to life for the thousands of people who attend each year. Plus, a special celebrity guest (yet to be revealed) will help the city’s mayor Cllr Martyn Kellaway turn on the lights. Be sure not to miss out on this evening filled with festive fun!

Birmingham

The second annual Christmas in Cathedral Square will take place on November 16th this year in the heart of Birmingham. Michelin-starred chef Glynn Purnell will be joined by this year’s panto Dame Andrew Ryan to switch-on the sparkling square lights. The Christmas market will also be open for business, providing visitors with hot festive food, warm drinks, unique Christmas gifts and sweet treats!

Chichester

Last year Chichester decided to have their people nominate a special individual to turn on the Christmas lights. After great success in 2021, the city would now like this to become their Chichester Christmas tradition. The specially selected person could be anyone from the community who has ‘lit up their lives’ over the past year. This will be a touching celebration you won’t want to miss, taking place on Saturday 26th November. Be sure to make your nomination before midnight on 31st October!
