See the docks at maritime Goole

Goole is a town in East Yorkshire around 20 miles north-east of Doncaster, that's home to Britain's most inland port. The free Yorkshire Waterways Museum reveals more on Goole's interesting maritime history - some days you can get a boat ride from here too. Wander down to the docks or head to The Junction - a theatre and cinema venue - to catch the latest release or live performance. There's a leisure centre with a flume to keep young ones amused, or for a beautiful stroll in the countryside head to the RSPB Nature Reserve at Blacktoft Sands or the peat landscape at Thorne and Hatfield Moors.

Head to the shops in York or Leeds

In around 45 minutes' drive you can be in either York or Leeds, which are both rich in great shopping and architecture. The Victoria Quarter in Leeds has high-end labels and the Corn Exchange a spectacular interior. The Royal Armouries Museum is free to enter and a very popular attraction. You can admire York by walking around the city walls and find out more about its chocolate-making past with a visit to York's Chocolate Story, perfect for everyone with a sweet tooth. The National Railway Museum is a fascinating tour around Britain's love affair with trains and is also free to enter.

See the polar bears at Yorkshire Wildlife Park
