University of Essex is located in leafy, landscaped campus less than half an hour by bus from the historic market town of Colchester. Head to National Trust Bourne Mill, a Grade I listed watermill that's the perfect spot for a waterside picnic. Further south you'll find Blackwater nature reserve, part of National Trust Copt Hall marshes. It's wonderful expanse, criss-crossed by streams and a hotspot for bird watchers and dog walkers and cyclists.

Just over an hour on the train from Colchester lands you at London Liverpool Station, walking distance from the hip Shoreditch neighbourhood. Start at Brick Lane, dotted with quirky independent retailers, two renowned bagel shops and a world famous weekly market. Head to Boxpark for stylish bars housed in shipping containers.
