Historic Heston

The west London suburb of Heston is just over 10 miles from central London and has been a settlement since Saxon times. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain flew from its aerodrome to meet Adolf Hitler in Germany before making his 'peace in our time' speech in 1938. It's close to such areas as Hounslow, Twickenham and Richmond.

Get on the bus to Nearby Brentford to sample a match at Griffin Park, an old school-style football stadium famous for having a pub at each corner. From there it's easy to get to Osterley Park for a far more idyllic and picturesque experience that may involve a walk around the park itself, sustenance at the Stables Cafe or a trip to Osterley House, a National Trust property open to the public.

Make the most of London's landmarks

The closest underground station to Heston is Hounslow West, just over a mile away, on the Piccadilly Line. It has direct links to Heathrow Airport to the west, while travelling east brings visitors directly into the West End. It's also possible to alight for some of the capital's largest museums at South Kensington, sample shopping in upmarket Knightsbridge or take a stroll through Green Park to Buckingham Palace.
