Call the Midwife in Poplar

Just a stone's throw from the shimmering towers of Canary Wharf, Poplar is part of London's Docklands area, and a peaceful waterside location. Much of the neighbourhood was destroyed in the Blitz, but it has risen from the ashes to thrive once more, and has benefited from significant regeneration in the area in the past few decades.

Today, Poplar is perhaps best known as the setting for the popular TV series Call the Midwife.

Soak up the atmosphere at foodie markets

The area's historic Chrisp Street Market, which is undergoing a major facelift, is an East End institution. Foodies should check out the Bite Street Market, held in East India Square every month.

If you're a fan of seafood, you'll love Billingsgate fish market. It used to be the largest in the world but now sells to London's top restaurants. The bustling wholesale market opens at 4am, and it's worth getting up early to see every type of fish imaginable being traded.

Wander along the Limehouse Cut

If you want some fresh air, go for an invigorating walk alongside the marina or the Limehouse Cut, London's oldest canal. Stop off at Bartlett Park, Poplar's largest green space which backs on to the waterway. There's a grass football pitch and adventure playground for youngsters here.
