Urban bliss in Upton

An attractive and affluent rural hamlet in east London that borders West Ham, Upton is close to the thriving cafes and restaurants of Forest Gate. Not to be confused with Upton Park, it's just to the north of West Ham United's former ground.

The area has great transport links, with Upton Park, Plaistow and East Ham Tube stations all close to one another, so getting around London is a doddle.

Get some fresh air in West Ham Park

The largest park in Newham is a green and pleasant land where you can slow down the pace of city life a little.

Wander through the ornamental gardens and wildflower meadows, and spot wildlife zipping across the pond. If you prefer to be a little more active, you can jog, cycle or play tennis and rounders. Younger members of the family can mess around in the playground and paddling pool in summer.

Go for a Ruby Murray

East London's food scene is overflowing with opportunities to indulge, and we don't just mean on jellied eels. This part of the capital has some of the best curry houses in London, in particular Brick Lane closer to the city centre. You won't have to go far to find an Indian takeaway either, if all you want is something quick. The famous Green Street area has a host of Indian and Pakistani restaurants, including Himalaya and Khadams.
