Twist and shout about West Malling

Expect striking ancient buildings, cosy pubs and independent shops in this vibrant Kent town just off the M20 Near Maidstone. It's over 50 years since The Beatles famously landed in West Malling to film their psychedelic Magical Mystery Tour. A community of Benedictine nuns, founded in around 1090, still occupies St Mary's Abbey in the town. Another ancient landmark of note is St Leonard's Tower - you can explore the remains of this tall Norman keep, and enjoy the peaceful landscape that surrounds it.

Relax in the area's parks and gardens

A short walk from the town centre is Manor Park Country Park, a large expanse of open green space. Native trees and the lake provide habitats for an abundance of wildlife, including squirrels, swans, woodpeckers and robins, and you can play ball games in the meadow. At Great Comp Garden to the west of West Malling, admire colourful displays of magnolias, azaleas and other exotic plants that surround a 17th-century manor house.

Come face to face with owls and other birds of prey at this engaging animal centre situated within the grounds of Kent Life open-air museum in Maidstone.
