The British Museum - history at your fingertips

Deep in the heart of London's Bloomsbury district on Great Russell Street lies the British Museum. Home to a permanent collection of approximately 13 million objects - it's the kind of place you could spend an entire holiday in and never see the same exhibit twice. Established in 1753, its aim is to document the story of human culture from its origins to the present day.

What to see at the British Museum

Among the must-see exhibits of the British Museum's permanent displays is the most comprehensive collection of Egyptian antiquities outside Cairo's Egyptian Museum; a selection of the museum's 140 mummies are always on display in this area, as is the Rosetta Stone. Other notable objects include the Sutton Hoo treasure, the Lewis Chessmen, and prints and drawings by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Raphael and Durer.
