The east London neighbourhood of Dalston is one the capital's coolest - and boasts a lively and diverse pub and bar scene. Start your evening at the Duke of Wellington, one of the area's best independent pubs. Nearby Shacklewell Arms plays host to the city's emerging indie bands, whilst Dalston Superstore is one of the most popular gay bars in Hackney. Night owls will have plenty to enjoy, as clubs like The Nest and Alibi host DJs spinning house, tech and electronica until the early hours.

Shop 'til you drop around Hackney

Dalston is within easy reach of some of east London's finest shopping. Ridley Road market is more than 200 years old, and now boasts more than 150 independent retailers. A short walk north brings you to Kristina Records, which boasts an impressive collection of new and used vinyl. If you want to splash the cash, head into Hackney central, where you can find stylish designer names like Aquascutum, Pringle and Burberry, all on and around Chatham Place.

Whilst it's known for its nightlife and shopping, Dalston is also within easy reach of the fine green spaces dotted around east London. Victoria Park is one of the capital's finest, with its charing lake and pagoda. London Fields is popular for BBQs during the summer months, whilst the expansive Hackney Marshes are perfect for walking the dog.
