Beach walks, sand dunes and windsurfing

Perched on the north-west tip of the Wirral Peninsula, windswept West Kirby is a wonderful place to blow away the cobwebs. The seafront is a good place to start, with its amazing views across the Dee Estuary out to the mountains of North Wales. The town's beach lies between sand dunes and sand flats, and next to the beach is the Marine Lake. It's extremely popular with sailors and windsurfers.

Walk to Hilbre Island

One of Wirral's hidden gems, this archipelago of three tiny islands is a nature lover's paradise. It's a stunning spot to keep lookout for rare wildlife, and the sunsets here are memorable. At low tide you can walk across to the islands from the mainland. There's a bird observatory here, and in summer you can see grey seals bobbing their heads above the water.

Enjoy a day out in Liverpool

West Kirby is also ideal if you want to explore further afield. Merseyrail's Wirral Line terminates in the town, so you have easy access to Liverpool city centre, as well as Cheshire and historic Chester. In Liverpool, you've got fantastic shopping and dining at Liverpool One, and a host of cultural activities, from seeing the latest exhibition at the Tate gallery to listening to live music at The Beatles' old stomping ground The Cavern Club.
