Tutankhamun and UFOs in Swaffham

This lovely market town in Norfolk is where Tutankhamun archaeologist Howard Carter grew up. At Swaffham Museum you can see an Egyptian exhibition in his honour, and piece together the town's Anglo-Saxon past. Another of Swaffham's absorbing attractions is the Green Britain Centre. Climb up 300 steps inside a wind turbine to enjoy sweeping views of the Norfolk countryside. See the Greenbird, the fastest wind-powered vehicle on the planet at 126.1mph, and discover the mystery behind the mangled remains of the UFO Blade.

Get back to nature at Gooderstone Water Gardens

Explore acres of colourful plants, mature trees and nature trails in these peaceful and atmospheric gardens just a short drive from Swaffham. Breathe in the beauty of the natural trout stream, ponds and flowing waterways spanned by 13 bridges. There's also a huge wildlife area to explore, and a large bird hide where you might spot a kingfisher or two.

Ride the Mid-Norfolk Railway

To the east of Swaffham is Dereham, from where you can hop aboard the Mid-Norfolk Railway for a steam train journey through the unspoilt rolling countryside. Stop off at Wymondham Abbey and walk up to the magnificent 900-year-old landmark to see its honey-coloured nave, gilded altar screen and intricately carved angel roof.
