Hidden gems around every corner in rural Uppingham

Lying between Leicester and Peterborough, Uppingham is one of only three towns in the tiny rural county of Rutland, and is best known for its public school. Shop for gifts with a difference among the historic honey-coloured stone buildings. Many of the traditional retailers are still family-run, from antique stores to second-hand bookshops. You'll also find several art galleries and welcoming pubs here.

See ospreys and water voles at Rutland Water

Whatever the season, there's always amazing wildlife to see or outdoor activities to enjoy at this popular nature reserve. Habitats to explore include lagoons and muddy banks, so don't forget your wellies. The reserve is home to waterfowl such as tufted ducks and greylag geese, and in spring and summer you can see the famous ospreys. Butterflies, otters, badgers and water voles also play here. On the lake, you can go canoeing, sailing or windsurfing, and there are some great cycle trails if you have your bike with you.

Rock up to Rockingham Castle

Built by William the Conqueror, this remarkable former royal fortress and hunting lodge just south of Uppingham is surrounded by magnificent gardens and grounds. Events take place here throughout the year, from Easter egg hunts to pumpkin trails. Inside the castle, explore the butler's pantry and old kitchen below stairs, before moving upstairs to the Tudor-style Great Hall. Looking for a cheap hotel Near Uppingham?
