Learn about Yorkshire's rich canal heritage

Beautiful Calderdale is always a pleasure to visit and Sowerby Bridge, located not far from Halifax, is one of the area's absolute gems. The market town is actually where the Rochdale Canal and Calder & Hebble Navigation meet, which means a trip would not be complete without spending a day on a canal boat.

A modern outlook

While its position at the meeting point of two canals of course means the town was once an industrial hub, in more recent times the area has been transformed into something far more modern. A host of cafes and bars can now be found in many renovated old buildings, meaning there is plenty to do as the evening draws in.

Family fun at local festivals

One date in the diary which Sowerby Bridge is famed for is the unique Rushbearing Festival, which is rich in tradition and takes place in September. The family-friendly event is also usually held on the same weekend as the Scarecrow Festival in Nearby Norland, which sees the local community create scarecrows based on a theme in order to raise money for charity. Looking for accomodation in Sowerby Bridge? The Travelodge Halifax Hotel is only a short drive from the town, while the Travelodge Huddersfield Hotel is another good value option.
