An artist's haven

West Yorkshire's Hebden Bridge has become a home for the area's many artists thanks to its stunning countryside, history and welcoming atmosphere. Its artistic flair is showcased daily through the various galleries found in the town - but it's at the many regular events when things really come alive. The annual Handmade Parade celebrates homemade art on a grand scale. And the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival is one of the county's longest-running, combining street entertainment with visual arts.

Choice of national parks

With the Yorkshire Dales to the North and the Peak District to the south, Hebden Bridge is ideally located to explore the northern countryside. And one of the best ways to do so is by joining the Nearby Pennine Way or the Calderdale Way. If you're looking for something shorter, take one of the many paths and bridleways on foot, bike or horseback. Or head to Hardcastle Crags, a wooded valley with visitor centre.

Head up to Heptonstall

Rising above Hebden Bridge is Heptonstall, a small Pennine hill village filled with historic buildings such as the Grammar School Museum, old Priory and grave of Sylvia Plath. It's like stepping back in time with few modern amenities but plenty of authentic atmosphere. The museum in the Old Grammar School provides insight into the infamous Cragg Vale Coiners, while there are views across the valley from the Buttress. Looking for accommodation in Hebden Bridge? The Travelodge Halifax Hotel is a short drive away and is ideally located for Halifax's shopping, art and entertainment.
