Follow ancient walkways in Chieveley
Handily placed just off the M4, this pretty village lies in rural Berkshire close to the historic market town of Newbury.
There's more to Chieveley than its motorway services. If you're a keen walker, take to the ancient footpaths to explore the village and surrounding countryside.
Step back in time at Donnington Castle
With its arresting twin-towered gatehouse and giant earthworks, Nearby Donnington Castle offers a slice of English Civil War history as well as wonderful views of Newbury and the surrounding chalk hills.
Both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I are thought to have stayed here, and the castle was once owned by the son of English poet Geoffrey Chaucer. Entry is free.
Go exploring in the Living Rainforest
Experience a tropical rainforest without leaving Berkshire. In two giant greenhouses packed with exotic trees, plants and creatures, you can see giant water lilies, dwarf crocodiles, Goeldi's monkeys, an armadillo, poisonous frogs, banana plants and free-roaming birds, butterflies and lizards. You'll also come face to face with snakes, scorpions and spiders.
