Explore myth and legend in Carmarthen

The oldest town in Wales is steeped in folklore and tradition, and it's thought that Merlin, the famous wizard of Arthurian legend, lived in a cave here. The town's Welsh name - Caerfyrddin - even translates as 'Merlin's Fort'.

At the Carmarthenshire County Museum, you can explore 50,000 years of local history across 11 galleries. The building was where the New Testament was first translated into Welsh.

Tread the path of Dylan Thomas in Laugharne

Everyone's heard of Carmarthen Castle, but why not venture south to see the romantic ruins of Laugharne Castle instead? It was the inspiration for much of celebrated Welsh poet Dylan Thomas's work. Visit the gazebo where he used to write many of his short stories.

Stroll through the castle's Victorian gardens before heading down to the foreshore to take in the spectacular views. Call in at Dylan's Boathouse before enjoying some liquid refreshment in one of the watering holes he used to frequent.

Wander among the blooms at the National Botanic Garden of Wales

Also in Carmarthenshire, this impressive collection of exotic plants and flowers is not to be missed. It boasts the world's biggest single-span glasshouse, where you can see unusual and endangered flora. Even if you're not a keen horticulturalist, there's much to enjoy here.

Planning a trip to Carmarthen? Travelodge St Clears Carmarthen Hotel is a short drive from the town, and handy for exploring Dylan country. Slightly further afield is Travelodge Llanelli Cross Hands Hotel.
