Step back in time in St Clears

The small town of St Clears on the banks of the River Taf in the western part of Carmarthenshire is worthy of note to both nature lovers and history buffs. For the former, everything from deer to peregrine falcons and red kites can be found in the stunning surrounding countryside; for the latter, the town's church, which dates back to 1100 AD, has some of the best surviving Norman stonecarvings in Wales.

Get out and about

While the town itself has some fine shops, including two award-winning butchers, several nice pubs and two craft centres, the hills and valleys just outside the town are well worth exploring. There's much to offer those interested in hiking, walking, cycling, birdwatching and photography, and there are plenty of similarly picturesque towns and villages scattered around the vicinity - including Llandowror and Llangynin.

Venture further afield

The county town of Carmarthen is a 20-minute drive away, about 10 miles as the crow flies, and has plenty to recommend it. Of particular note is Carmarthen Castle, an imposing structure with strong ties to history as well as myth and legend - Merlin was said to have been born Nearby.

Planning a trip to St Clears? Travelodge St Clears Carmarthen Hotel is by far your best bet, while Travelodge Swansea M4 Hotel and Travelodge Llanelli Cross Hands Hotel might be attractive to those heading in from the east.
