Established in 1821 as the world’s first mechanics’ institute, Heriot-Watt University’s main campus is located in south west Edinburgh in 380 acres of parkland, which makes it one of the leafiest and most picturesque settings for a seat of learning in the UK. The site also houses the Edinburgh Conference Centre and Europe’s oldest research park, which opened in 1971 and carries out pioneering work in such fields as engineering, computing, textiles and design.
