The Brunswick Centre - brutal with beauty

The Brunswick Centre's brutalist architecture won't be to everybody's taste, but it's a now-iconic structure in the heart of London's historic Bloomsbury district. Completed in 1972, it consists of tiered apartments and a retail and leisure area consisting of mainstream and independent shops, restaurants and a cinema. It's also popped up in such films and TV series as The Passenger, Crime Traveller and Gangster No 1.

History lives on at the British Museum

A short stroll from the Brunswick Centre is the British Museum. Dedicated to exploring the history of humanity, art and culture, its permanent collection is home to around eight million items. Every continent on the globe is represented, with highlights including Egyptian artefacts, the Elgin Marbles, works of art by the Old Masters and the Lewis Chessmen. Temporary exhibitions are also organised; check the museum's website for up-to-date details.

Horsing around at the Horse Hospital

Just around the corner from the Brunswick Centre is The Horse Hospital, an independent arts venue that specialises in counter-culture and outsider art. If the weird and wonderful is your bag, this is the place for you. Among those who have exhibited there are fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, 1960s icon Anita Pallenberg and cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky.
