A lively cultural scene in Plumstead

With the Thames as a backdrop, this area of south-east London is closely connected to neighbouring Woolwich, where the former Royal Arsenal was at the heart of the military weapons industry for more than 200 years.

Plumstead High Street is a melting pot of cultures and nationalities, and every summer Plumstravaganza showcases the local arts scene, with open artists' studios, poetry, walks and photography competitions.

Green and pleasant summits

At the heart of the neighbourhood is Plumstead Common, a large stretch of grassland with a range of sports facilities. A wooded area at the edge of the common is a nature reserve. Slade Ponds and ravine is an ancient valley formed at the end of the ice age by torrents of water from melting glaciers.

Further east, Bostall Hill Park has wonderful views from the top. Next to it is Lesnes Abbey Woods, an expanse of woodland with pathways and a protected area for rare plants and animals.

Tasty nosh to try in Plumstead

If you're looking for places to eat in the area, hang out at The Plumstead Pantry, overlooking the common. Try the pantry hash - potatoes, red onions, wild mushrooms and spinach topped with a fried egg. The Queen's diner does a great fry-up, while the Red Lion serves tasty noodles if you love Chinese food.
