Thamesmead - Town of the 21st Century

Once named the Town of the 21st Century, Thamesmead is a large housing estate straddling the boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley, situated on a patch of former marshland around the Woolwich area. After a period of military use in the early 20th century, the area was developed by the Greater London Council from the sixties through to the eighties.

Get to know Bexley better

The London borough of Bexley is situated on the easternmost edge of the city, bordering Greenwich and Bromley. A less built-up area of London, it has a number of more rural, historic attractions, such as Crossness Pumping station and Danson House, as well as small, scattered family attractions such as Danson Splash Park and Playground.

See the enchanting Red House

A short drive from Thamesmead, visitors in the area can take the time to see Red House, the only residence commissioned, erected, and lived in by William Morris, the prolific British artist, writer, and socialist thinker. The house was acquired by the National Trust 10 years ago, and now visitors can walk through its rooms to gain a unique view of some of Morris's earliest art and decor works, as well as an unknown pre-Raphaelite painting that was uncovered in 2013.
